These are flexible RESPs with no set-up fees, no recurring contribution requirements and three different types of RESPs to suit various investor profiles:

• IDEO+ Conservative—investors with a low risk tolerance;
• IDEO+ Adaptive—investors with a moderate risk tolerance;
• IDEO+ Responsible—investors with a moderate risk tolerance who wish to go further in terms of sustainable investment.

Each IDEO+ plan is managed according to a scalable policy that automatically adjusts for the age of the child, and 100% of the assets are entrusted to portfolio managers who take environmental, social and governance (ESG) criteria into account.

You can contribute up to $2,500 per Beneficiary per year to take advantage of government grants, unless you use unused grant room from previous years (maximum catch-up of one year at a time, so a total contribution of $5,000 per year).

The lifetime limit for contributions to all RESP accounts is $50,000 per Beneficiary; however, the lifetime limit for contributions eligible for government grants is $36,000 per Beneficiary.

Note that contributions made to a child’s RESP by someone else (such as your employer) also count towards the contribution limits.

In Quebec, a minimum of 30% of your contributions are paid into your RESP as a government grant. Grants apply to both your own deposits and employer contributions, if any. You are entitled to the Canada Education Savings Grant (CESG) of 20-40% and the Quebec Education Savings Incentive (QESI) of 10%.

In order to maximize grants for the current year, contributions must be made by December 31.

To make changes to the contributions submitted by your employer, you can contact the person responsible for contributions at your employer with your new instructions.

Yes, you can ask your employer to deduct an additional amount to be deposited into your RESP, or you can make a one-time addition directly from your bank account in your Client Space.

Make sure you always stay within the limits to fully benefit from the grants.

Yes. As a subscriber, you will have access to Kaleido’s Accompanying Services Program, which includes exclusive content and services—free or at a preferred rate—in family finance, tutoring and academic support, health and wellness, family coaching and career guidance for teens.

Yes. You can open an RESP with Kaleido even if you already have an RESP with another institution. It is also possible to transfer your current RESP to the new RESP that you open with Kaleido.

Remember, the maximum grant amount for a Beneficiary is calculated annually, taking into account all RESPs opened in his or her name. It is important not to exceed the limit.

Yes, but there are special rules that apply to recipients who are 16 or 17 years of age.

Contributions made for these new Beneficiaries may be subsidized only if one of the following two conditions is met:

1. A minimum of $2,000 has been contributed to (and not withdrawn from) the child’s RESP by the end of the calendar year in which the child turns 15;

or

2. A minimum of $100 per year has been contributed to (and not withdrawn from) the child’s RESP in at least four of the years before the end of the calendar year in which the child turns 15.

Withdrawals normally begin when your Beneficiary begins a qualifying post-secondary education program. Is your child now at this stage? Simply apply for an Education Assistance Payment (EAP) in your Client Space or through our Customer Relations Centre.

You may withdraw your contributions at any time, but if you withdraw without proof of your Beneficiary’s enrolment in a post-secondary education program, the grants will have to be returned to the governments and cannot be recovered on his or her behalf. This type of withdrawal will also impact the lifetime grant limits for your Beneficiary.

Contributions from your employer are a taxable benefit that must be reflected on the T4 issued to you for the tax year in which the contribution was made.

On this amount, you also contribute to the Quebec Pension Plan, Employment Insurance and the Quebec Parental Insurance Plan.

Once your Beneficiary is eligible to start his or her post-secondary education, you will apply for an Education Assistance Payment (EAP) for him or her.

EAPs include grants as well as revenues generated over time. EAPs paid to your Beneficiary become taxable income for him or her, to be included in his or her tax return for the year in which the EAPs are paid. Students often have lower incomes and little or no taxation.

A Beneficiary who receives an EAP will automatically be issued a tax statement by Kaleido.

Please note that your contributions belong to you and can be returned to you tax-free. You can choose to keep this money or give it to your Beneficiary tax-free, at your discretion.

If your beneficiary does not enrol in an eligible post-secondary education program, you have several options:

• Keep the money in the RESP in case the Beneficiary changes his or her mind a few years later. An RESP can be held for up to 35 years after registration.
• Transfer the money to another child by changing the Beneficiary.
• Recover your contributions and, under certain conditions, income in the form of an Accumulated Income Payment (AIP).

No, there is no fee to sign up for an IDEO+ RESP with Kaleido.

IDEO+ plans have a total management fee on assets of approximately 2.12%. Total fees are estimates and may vary slightly up or down depending on the age of the child and the plan selected. Fees are paid directly by the plans and influence net returns.
