Market review and review of your Kaleido RESPs for the second quarter of 2025

September 3, 2025

Here is a market review along with a review of the performance of Kaleido RESPs for the second quarter of 2025. The market review for the period April to June 2025 is marked by high volatility. The main reason, unsurprisingly, is the Trump administration’s implementation of tariffs against Canada and other trading partners around the world.

To find out more, see the quarterly reports on our RESP returns for the second quarter of 2025, and watch the video commentary by Jean-Stéphane Parent, Vice-President and Chief Investment Officer at Kaleido, on the main factors influencing your investments in the second quarter.

This edition highlights the main factors influencing your investments during the period from January to March 2025. Among these factors, the markets reacted strongly to the announcement of new U.S. tariffs, raising legitimate concerns among many investors. On the stock markets, the S&P 500 index was adversely affected by these measures, recording a quarterly return of -4.2% in Canadian dollars. The S&P/TSX index held up better, posting a performance of 1.5% over the same period. In the fixed-income securities sector, the FTSE Canada Universe Bond Index closed the quarter with a return of 2%. In addition, the Bank of Canada lowered its key rate by 25 basis points, from 3% to 2.75%.

The investment climate is still volatile, but it is important to take a step back and maintain a long-term vision.
