Is the student penalized for taking a gap year?

My child wants to take a gap year. Will he still have access to his EAPs when he goes back to school, or will he lose everything?

Not at all! Many students take a year off to travel or work before they start post-secondary education, so it’s good to know that educational assistance payments (EAPs) remain available for 35 years after the RESP was opened.

However, to ensure the grant money received for your child is not returned to the government, we recommend you keep your savings in your RESP until your beneficiary can provide proof of enrolment in an eligible post-secondary program.
